Pros and cons of TomTom U.K. & Ireland app for iPhone and iPad

TomTom U.K. & Ireland app good for

This app has been a god send. I recently went to the UK on holiday and to hire a sat nav unit from the hire car company was going to cost me 70GBP the app then only cost $87 so when i worked out the whole conversion it was cheaper to buy the app, especially as i vist the UK fairly regularly. I used the tom tom every single trip even if i knew where i was going, just in case, and found on a couple of occasions that i was unable to cut across lanes quick enough to make the turn i needed and then essentially became lost. That is where the Tom Tom saved me, within the blink of an eye it had recalculated the route and had me back on track. the improvements id love to see are traffic information so that you can go around any accidents/roadworks etc, and an on foot guidance similar to that of google. i know google uses the internet for its directions and to expect this to be held on your phone is probably out of the question but wishful thinking is allowed right!?
Ok, I may have been a little harsh in my previous review. Turns out waitibg for gps was because I was in airplane mode. Come on tomtom, most people use gps when they travel so their phobe could be in airplane mode. Maybe a warning to check airplane mode if you cant get a fix? Could save you sone frustrated customers. Other than that its been working pretty good. Deducted one star because its crap at recognizing contact addresses and there seems no way to download poi databases (no tesco or sainsburys? Really?).
I like the app overall. Its "good" in every regard - it has few weaknesses, but other apps do particular things better though TomTom the best overall. 3D view: TomTom is good, but Waze is awesome. You can see more of the route in Waze and its panning and zoning is better. Maps: no complaints. Much better than any other satnav app Ive used. Finding destinations: TomTom has too many clicks. My typical usage for me is to find the destination and start driving while the route is being calculated. Unfortunately I then have to click a few more times while Im driving. See Waze for ideas on how this could be better. The Facebook integration is really good. Think about it. I use this app to find places Ive never been before. They are not friends in my address book (I rarely enter addresses). The places I go are basically "places" in facebook. However many times I use the desktop to find a place and then I have to re-find it in TomTom. Hopefully there is an easy way to send a google maps link to TomTom. Finding places is the weakest part of any satnav app including TomTom though TomTom does it as good as anyone today.
I own the TomTom US version as my everyday GPS device. I just got back from a trip to Ireland and it worked beautifully. I looked at cheaper options, realizing that it could be a one-time purchase. But, the familiarity of TomTom and the comparison to a rental car GPS for $17/day for 9 days made it a no-bainer. It found all our B&Bs, golf courses, and other destinations from the TomTom POIs. The maps are onboard and fairly small download. I took a iPhone mount and 12V charger and no issues. I use the charger with the US version too, it just uses more power than the maps application. We routed from Dublin - Galway - Cliffs of Moher - Dingle - Cork - back to Dublin and always had the correct directions. Dont worry, it will work.
Just took a 10 day trip to Ireland and ranged from Dublin to South Coast to Galway -- and back. The app never let us down even when traversing "R" and "L" roads. The iPad 3 takes a LOT of power with GPS and maps going so I *highly* recommend using a car adapter with enough power for the iPad (> 2 Amps). Even then the iPad did overheat and shutdown once. Holding it near the open window in Ireland weather quickly had it cool ;-) App never steered us wrong. Controls & messages could definitely be more intuitive as panic sets in near a complex round-about and you try to find the turn/direction after the current one. Questions were sometimes worded in a confusing manner - something like "Avoid toll roads?" can be confusing as the default should be to use toll roads -- or your journey will be way longer. 5 stars as we could not have navigated, in the rain, to all the great places (large and small) we visited without this TomTom App. Only issue was "poor GPS reception" in and near Dublin! This was not TomToms fault as Apple Maps showed the same message. Day was partially cloudy so I dont understand this issue.

Some bad moments

It never finds a GPS signal while google map have found hundred times
We bought this app for our 2 week self drive tour of Ireland. It lost gps signal for 2 hours our first day, but Ill give it to them I didnt buy the car kit so I guess thats the chance I took. They warn you that it will drain battery, but it was so bad that I couldnt keep my phone charged even while plugged into the car adapter. None of the preloaded points of interest we used were correct. It took us to the old now closed down Waterford Crystal factory (the new one only allows you to view a showroom). Trying to find the davenport hotel in Dublin it routed us to the opposite side of Merrion square from where the hotel is actually located, forcing us to get directions from reception and sound like idiots in the process. It did not have some of Irelands most famous sights preloaded into it at all (the cliffs of moher, bushmills distillery, the hill of Tara, etc). The only time this app worked really well was on the large national roads and motorways that are easily navigated anyway. I bought this app because we didnt want to rack up data roaming charges, but it was useless without Internet and google to help it along. In my opinion this was a big waste of money. Maybe the UK maps and pois are better.
I bought the app, loaded it onto my iPhone 4 by syncing with iTunes on my Mac, ran the app on my phone and…nada! The splash screen that says TomTom simply sits there FOREVER. My flight to London takes off in ten minutes and now it looks like Ill have to buy the Garmin app when I land! First time Ive ever spent more than 99 cents on an app. Probably the last time. And Ill never buy anything from TomTom ever again.
(1) Local landmarks are not in the maps. Kilcolman road in claremorris is not recognized and brings you to same road about 7 miles away. (2) When navigating it brings you on minor roads instead of wider roads. I have a garmin that is 4 yrs old and yet it brought me on national roads. (3) The navigation part of the app is very hard to stop and continues voice navigation even when the phone is switched off. (4) When you arrive at a destination there is no way of inputting the location so it will remember it the next time. Im sorry I bought it. Could be good if above items were fixed.
Read the iffy reviews on this. Should have listened to the negative ones. Brought it for the iPad. It was always searching for a satellite system. When it would find one, you couldnt find directions as an error message would come up. This occurred for everything that we tried to locate. At no time did this system work right. On our final day to the airport it had us on the M2 turning through a ditch onto the airport runway. I would really like a full refund for this product. It was not worth the $38 some odd dollars to purchase it, never worked right, and cant give proper directions. Refund please!!
But during navigation the route 120mil the application turned off eight times on the road :/ problems on the iPhone 5s
